Therapeutic baking

Long weekend of unpacking, and yet, we're not finished. We need shelves.

Baking provided a brief respite from dealing with all the boxes. I made more pistachio-apricot oatmeal cookies...mm...and a cherry apricot crumble. The crumble was enjoyed with cherry fudge truffle ice cream. Light ice cream, from Haagen Dazs. I am always skeptical of so-called light/lite products, but this was not bad with the crumble.

...Cherry Apricot Crumble...

8 apricots, halved
Aprroximately 2/3 lb cherries, halved (I used Rainier)
3 T vanilla sugar
1/4 C slivered almonds

Crumble topping
1 1/4 C all-purpose flour
1/2 C almond flour
1/3 C sugar
1/2 C butter, cold
pinch of salt

Preheat oven to 400° F. Combine the first four ingredients in a baking dish. In another bowl, mix flours, 1/3 C sugar, and salt. Cut the butter into pieces and incorporate into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs. (I used a pastry cutter.) Pour on top of the fruit. Bake for about 30-35 minutes, until the crumble is golden brown. Enjoy with ice cream. (Or yogurt, if you have it for breakfast!)

Moving day

I moved! Lots of boxes, and a big mess everywhere.

Our new place! We live upstairs.

Skirty spring

Isn't mid-May supposed to be spring? Time to wear springy floral skirts and sandals? It's so dreary outside!

After the move, I want to make a skirt like these...inspired by the incredible sewing productivity of super eggplant.

I especially like the one on the left. Cute shoes too!

Boxes and birds

I am moving this weekend. Lots of packing....not enough boxes. As part of my procrastination efforts, I finally finished my sushi pjs...yes, the pajamas I started months ago. The knit fabric is what slowed me down!

A few weeks ago Dan and I went to see the great blue heron nests at Stow Lake, and we learned of an oriole nest on the stone bridge...it was a beautiful woven nest on a small palm tree. This weekend we went back to see how the young herons were doing, and actually saw an oriole...probably papa bird...very striking yellow and especially beautiful in flight, when the black and white wings are in motion. Not sure if it was a Bullock's Oriole or Hooded Oriole.

The little falcons are exploring the PG&E ledge, so they are often out of sight now.

Apparently there also is a falcon nest on the Kodak building in Rochester, New York. I don't see the little one who hatched yesterday, but I think the mama is still watching over the other eggs.

I'm not feeling so good, so I made tomato-chickpea soup. Easy to make and comforting to eat.

Nest in the city

Peregrine falcon nest...if you watch for awhile the blobs of fluff move around, and they are young falcons!

Me want cookie

"Sesame Street's Cookie Monster now calls cookies a 'sometime food,'" according to the The New York Times!

These ginger-molasses cookies were chewy and full of ginger goodness. I added bits of crystallized ginger, but they were a bit too small to detect.
