Hare mail

I can't believe I missed Operation Haremail! I love sending and receiving packages in the mail, and what could be better than chocolate and bunnies?

I did send a haremail package of my own though. Here is the recipient Veronica, daughter of my friends Portia and Erek, with bunny. Aren't they cute? I'm told she likes to chew on the ears.

Handbag hanger

Help for spring cleaning...a handbag hanger! I like the purse parlor and green dottie patterns. The hanger has seven loops...supposedly each loop can hold up to four handbags, but that seems rather crowded to me.

Dark chocolate tragedy

The sour cream waffles were a bust...disappointing. But this yogurt cake with raspberries, topped with freshly whipped cream, was well-received at Easter dinner. Next I want to try these muffins, as I now have cacao nibs from Scharffen Berger chocolate factory. Enjoyed many addition to the thrill of seeing chocolate poured into bars on the tour. However, Joanne and I were horrified when one man threw away his 62% semisweet sample...a huge piece, too...such a waste!

I finished another for upcoming Giants baseball...photographic evidence may be coming soon...I inch slowly toward digital camera capabilities...

Waffle Day

It's true! March 25 is Sweden's Waffle Day. In observance, I ate a waffle this morning. Not freshly ironed, but still yummy.

I finally made these cookies, and they are delicious! The brown sugar indeed produces a caramelly flavor and simultaneously crisp yet chewy a few of them I had to eat them. I like to pretend they're semi-healthy, what with the oatmeal, apricots, and pistachios.

I was feeling ambitious last night and worked on my sushi pajama pants. I learned that knit fabric is very difficult to work with, especially for an impatient novice seamstress like myself.

My little cupcake

Is My Blog Burning is featuring CUPCAKES this month, but I have no photographic evidence of the cupcakes I instead I had a good laugh reading about super eggplant's IMBB cupcakes.

Also, cupcake cookies jars via not martha...though I'm not sure about that since I would expect to find a cupcake inside....

No time for cookies

Maybe tonight. I hear the pistachios calling from the cupboard. (Not really...I'm not that crazy yet, I hope.)

Broiled tofu turned out to be quite tasty!

No pudge in springtime

Happy spring! According to the calendar, anyway. It's gray and drizzly!

I have strong feelings against cake mix. But sometimes I am wrong. This weekend Jeff and I made brownies from a box at his house (and when I say we, I mean he). The brownies were yummy! And nonfat. No fat! You just add yogurt to the mix and bake. I am intrigued. No Pudge brownie mix from Trader Joe's.

Still, I think I will stick to baking from scratch, for the most part. Tonight I am planning to make superfat pistachio-apricot oatmeal cookies from Orangette. There are so many Orangette recipes I want to try, especially after the success of the chickpea salad and the choccie-ginger-banana-walnut bread I made this weekend. The best part was my loaf pan was a tad small for the quantity of batter, so I used the leftover bits for a few muffins!

Hey there chickpea

Last night I made this chickpea salad recipe from Orangette. It was a big hit. Usually I am anti canned beans - I am all about the dried beans - but blanching seemed to remove the cannyness. And it sure was quicker to make this way!

I am not Irish but I do like the color green, so in observance of St. Patrick's Day I made green tea muffins. I saw the recipe on super eggplant last month, but didn't get matcha powder until this weekend. Why do the muffins look so green in her photo? My batter was a very pretty green, but after baking the muffins just looked like normal muffins, with the slightest tinge of yellow-green. Hmm...I wonder if I did something wrong? Still, they're quite yummy.

Doesn't Millie remind you of a cupcake?

No more Samoas

That's right. I finished them. By myself. In less than a week. I am not buying any more Girl Scout cookies...not this year, anyway.

The other night I used up leftover buttermilk to make thyme drop biscuits from the January issue of Everyday Food...very quick and yummy! I am quite pleased with my decision to subscribe. In other food news, this week's Chronicle Food section featured local food blogs, as well as this bit about Chocolate & Zucchini, where I first read about the Epiphany tradition of the Galette des available (in January) at Bay Bread Boulangerie, though one piece was not nearly big enough for Dan and me to sample. Next time: a whole galette. Plus, what's not to like about a dessert that gives you a chance to be queen for the day?

Samoas for breakfast

Girl Scout cookies are hard to resist...trans fat and all. I bought some from a student, and when I took out my bag to pay her, a group of fourth grade girls oohed and aahed over my Don Don shoulder bag. Should I be concerned that my accessory elicits compliments from 9-year old girls? One student even has a Don Don coin purse! Still, who can resist such a cute pooch peeking out of the pocket? The reason I had to have this bag (when I saw someone on Muni carrying a similar one with Don Don) was because I have the Don Don dog lamp, thoughtfully gifted from a friend. I finally found the bag at Spiral and Circle...check out other Don Don and Kam Kam (a cat) items from Pets @ Work.

Speaking of bags, have you seen the Bag Blog? And many bags...I wonder if there is a cupcake bag...

Spring fever is in the air...ooh, I wish I could play hooky today!

This weekend I made Meyer lemon cupcakes...tried a new recipe that I adapted slightly... used a bit of lemon extract along with vanilla and skipped the lemon curd. I am not sure about the results...the cake was a bit tough...maybe overmixed? Also tried a quick lemon-vanilla-cream cheese icing, which did the job of covering the cupcakes but was not super spectacular:

...Lemony Icing...
8 oz light cream cheese
1 c powdered sugar
1 t vanilla extract
juice of 1/2 Meyer lemon

Beat cream cheese with vanilla and lemon juice.
Sift sugar into cream cheese mixture and beat until combined.
Keep refrigerated until ready to frost cupcakes.

And I started another scarf using GGH Esprit. I am up to my ears in unfinished scarves...

And now for some arts and culture...saw the amazing dancers of ODC Dancing Downtown, enjoyed the views and art at the Legion of Honor, and finished reading Memoirs of a Geisha. (I didn't care for it.) Outdoor highlights...pooches all over the city, snowy plovers and sandpipers at Ocean Beach, tulips and Iceland poppies in Queen Wilhemina's garden, and calalillies popping up throughout Golden Gate Park...

Someday I hope to have a digital camera...

Cupcakes and spring training

The Giants play their first game of spring training today...ah, I wish I were in Scottsdale enjoying the game...speaking of which, look at these tiny cupcake earrings in the Scottsdale Sweets collection...she also makes sushi jewelry!

In like a lion...

It's the first day of March! My Easter beagles are making their annual appearance, so the countdown to spring has begun...which means baseball season is just around the corner. I'm ready.

Dan and I posing by McCovey Cove at Giants Fan Fest last month...the ballpark looks so empty!
